A second pointer is:
That Gut Feeling : many
of these non-verbals like the jump in the
Adam's Apple are muscular contractions
originating unconsciously from the vagus
nerve, the longest cranial nerve in the
body that runs from our brain to our gut -
intestines. This is the origin of the term
"gut feeling" and why the gut is called
"the second brain". For example, if you
are nervous before giving a speech you
might get a pounding headache or you might
even be physically sick. It's also why
medications like anti-depressants, acting
on the brain, cause side effects such as
diarrhea or constipation which is acting
on the intestine.
A third pointer is:
Changes : watch for a big
switch when a certain topic comes up. For
instance, a woman who is cheating on her
husband may be chatting easily with you
and then you ask her why there's a mark on
her fourth finger of her left hand (ring
finger) or why you can't pick her up at
her house next time and she suddenly:
- Shifts dramatically in her chair,
flipping her head to the side
- Freezes like a rabbit caught in the
headlights
- Coughs to give herself time to
prepare an answer
- Blinks rapidly or even turns away,
or covers her mouth
Answers you in a way that sounds
like a memorized speech, or it just too
cool!
